Signs of the Times

From extravagant gambling advertisements to cyanide warnings, fewer things better symbolize the complicated history of Reno, Nevada than signage. Curated by students in the University of Nevada, Reno’s Spring 2024 Gallery Practices class led by faculty Austin Pratt, Sign of the Times reflects upon and reimagines the past, present, and future of Reno through typography and signage.

Sign of the Times was created utilizing a variety of historic photographs provided by the Photo collection at the Nevada Historical Society in Reno, Nevada. Students in UNR Gallery Practices learn about varying types of art exhibitions spaces, and their respective missions and operations, while also producing their own exhibitions and curatorial projects.

Historic photographs courtesy of the photo collection Nevada Historical Society. Student curator-artists: Alissa Acevas, Abbay Anderson, Brooke Germain, Luca Grangilia, Andi Moffit, and Raymond Parkman.

Portrait of East Shore Lake Tahoe

Students enrolled in the Interdisciplinary Drawing course Fall ’23 at University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe were challenged to work collaboratively to create a material portrait of the east of Lake Tahoe. Students were taken for a hike along the meandering trails of the east shore past Sand Harbor, their only directive was to collect objects both human-made and natural materials, but objects that they felt defined the area and the landscape. Back at the studio all objects were added to a table and considered. Each student drew their objects with likeness, the drawing was then scanned, copied, and cut out. Creating a mockup for a the much larger collaborative drawing. Students then scaled up their drawings into the collaborative drawing. The final drawing measures 109” long and 36” wide.

This course was taught by interdisciplinary Art Faculty Molly Allen.
