What We Do
The Public Safety Dispatcher wears many hats - all at the same time! From taking incoming 9-1-1 and non-emergency calls to dispatching our partner police and fire agencies, there is never a dull moment in the dispatch center. It can be tough sometimes; dispatchers help citizens through a lot of difficulty and life-threatening situations, as well as taking the proper steps to ensure the responders are safe. The 9-1-1 dispatch center runs 24/7, meaning dispatchers work various shifts (dayshift, swing shift, graveyard), including weekends and holidays.
However, the benefits of the job can outweigh some of the difficulties. The City of Reno provides excellent benefits, including medical insurance, paid sick leave and vacation, paid holidays, deferred compensation matching, and many other perks. The role of a dispatcher is not just a job but a career. Dispatch employees get incentive pay for particular educational accomplishments, and the department provides continuing education to its employees.
Last but definitely not least, being a Reno Public Safety Dispatcher is an exciting and rewarding career! No two days are ever the same, and dispatchers play a critical role in keeping our community safe. There is a sense of pride that comes along knowing you are helping people on what could ultimately be the worst day of their lives.
