Therapeutic Recreation InternOverview

City of Reno Adaptive and Inclusion Programs provide therapeutic recreation through inclusive and adaptive recreational opportunities for people with disabilities. Our programs promote physical, social, and mental health and well-being for a variety of disability populations and age groups. For a current listing of offerings, browse our website or visit us on Facebook.

Students will have the opportunity to have hands-on experience through direct participation and support in programs. Students will work as part of a team to plan and facilitate existing and new programs, including classes, special events and tournaments.

The overall goal of an internship with City of Reno Adaptive and Inclusion Programs is to give students a valuable experience and direct service learning opportunity in a community recreation program that provides services to persons with disabilities, as well as to provide the tools to become lifelong advocates for people with disabilities.

Therapeutic Recreation Internship

Under the supervision of a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS), this internship program has been designed to align with the NCTRC job analysis areas and meets NCTRC internship standards. The intern assists in planning and facilitating a variety of recreational programs for individuals with disabilities in a community setting.

A Therapeutic Recreation (TR) Internship is generally a 14 week/40 hour per week commitment, with a $100 per week stipend (budget permitting). Therapeutic Recreation internships are individually designed based on program needs, university or college requirements, and the intern's goals and objectives.

Therapeutic Recreation students will be part of the day-to-day operations at City of Reno Adaptive and Inclusion Programs including staff meetings, program design / planning / implementation, community outreach, and the wide variety of tasks that are part of working at a municipal organization.
