Steve is devoted to public safety as demonstrated by his years of service and commitment to working with the community to curb crime and create a safer place for Reno residents.
As Reno Police Chief, Steve has taken the Department to new levels of innovation and policing excellence. The Department is a model and leader in Intelligence Led Policing, Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving, and in dealing quickly and effectively with community and neighborhood problems and issues. In recent years, the Department has also demonstrated, with the community's support, its effectiveness in dealing with complex emergencies impacting our region.
During Steve’s more than 34 years of service, he has spent numerous years in Major Case and Homicide Investigations, Emergency Management and Crisis Intervention. He has more than 25 years of experience in Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and other special operations units in policing. He has more than 15 years of command level experience.
Steve was promoted to Deputy Chief in January 2008. Then he served as Interim Police Chief from March 2010 until March 2011 when he accepted the permanent position as Chief of Police.
Steve is currently consulting for the Police Executive Research Foundation, the Community Oriented Policing Office, and the Department of Justice.
Steve’s most important accomplishments are being a father and husband, teaching at the University of Nevada, Reno, and mentoring young men and women.
He is very modest in saying that his awards and honors were achieved through collaborations with various people and organizations. In most cases the excellent work by the men and women of the Reno Police Department.
Steve is very passionate about service above self and the responsibility to add value in the service the City provides as a police organization. He is committed to life-long learning.
Steve received a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Studies from California State University at Long Beach and a Master in Public Administration degree from Golden Gate University. He is a graduate of the National Academy at the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Leadership Program at the Center for Public Leadership at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Steve is also a graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School's Homeland Security and Counter-Terrorism Program.
When not working, you can find Steve enjoying his passion for functional fitness training, the outdoors and training with his close friends in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu at Charles- Gracie Reno. With Steve’s extensive special operations experience he also enjoys developing team-oriented physical challenge events for charities, including the Northern Nevada Children Cancer Foundation and the Northern Nevada Military Alliance. Steve created Tactical Athletic Performance (TAP) with a colleague to develop, manage and facilitate events for these charities.
