The Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) in a cooperative project with the City of Reno, City of Sparks, Washoe County, Nevada Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration are working to retime signals throughout the region. The Regional Traffic Signal Operations Improvement project is designed to reduce number of stops and waiting times at intersections.  Approximately 1/3 of the City’s 240 traffic signals were retimed as part of this project using federal Capacity Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) funds. The plan is to procure yearly CMAQ funding to retime approximately 1/3 of the City’s signals on an annual basis. It is recommended that traffic signal timing be updated every 3 to 5 years.
